It
was in the year 1973 that Little Flower Congregation launched its
pioneering mission in Punjab, the cradle of Sikhism, at the
invitation of Rt. Rev. Dr. Symphorian Keeprath, Bishop of Jalandhar.
On account of his invitation, Very Rev. Fr. Basilius Panatt, the
founder of Little Flower Congregation sent the first batch of CST
missionaries.
A formal contract was
made between the Bishop of Jalandhar and Superior General of Little
Flower Congregation in 1973. According to the contract signed by the
Ordinary of Jalandhar and the Superior General of Little Flower
Congregation on 8.12.1973 "the civil districts of Faridkot and
the Tahazils of Abohar and Fazilika of the district of Ferozepur
were handed over to the Little Flower Congregation." Our first
house in Punjab was started on 1st January 1974, at Muktar, Punjab.
Article 3 of the
Second contract made on 1.10.1986 states: "The proposal to
create a separate Ecclesiastical Unit of the Civil districts
mentioned above, can be taken up with the Holy See when the area has
been developed with at least seven more self supporting resident
stations and is manned by sufficient number of experienced
missionaries". By the second contract, which is both a renewal
and amplification of the former contract, the Ordinary of the place
entrusted to Little Flower Congregation, the whole of both the civil
districts of Ferozepur and Faridkot for evangelization, pastoral
ministry and development. At present Khrist Jyoti Vice Province is
working in the four Districts of Punjab viz. Faridkot, Ferozepur,
Moga and Muktsar.
Rajasthan, yet another
challenging region for missionary works, was to receive the Jyoti of
Christ in the year 1982 from CST Fathers as we launched our
Rajasthan mission at the invitation of Rt. Rev. Dr. Ignatius Menezes,
Bishop of Ajmer - Jaipur. In the year 1982 a contract was made
between Bishop of Ajmer - Jaipur and the Superior General of CST
Congregation. As per the contract in March 1982, "the civil
districts of Sri Ganganagar and Churu in Rajasthan were handed over
to the Little Flower Congregation for evangelization, pastoral
ministry and development." Then on a Mutual contract between
the diocesan Bishop and the Superior General of Little Flower
Congregation, dated April 20, 1986, the districts of Sri Ganganagar,
Churu, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Sikar and Jhunjhunu were entrusted to
the Little Flower Congregation to carry out the work of
evangelization, pastoral ministry and development on a permanent
basis". The article 3 of the said contract includes the
provision to take up with Rome the proposal to create a separate
ecclesiastical Unit of six civil districts mentioned above, when
this area is developed with a few more residential stations and
within a period of three years". In Rajasthan Khrist Jyoti
Province has at present seven districts including Hanumangarh.
The administrative set
up of the Punjab-Rajasthan CST Mission has undergone various phases.
Initially it was mission with its own mission superior. Later on it
was attached to the St. Joseph's Province as a region, as the
congregation was divided into provinces. Our mission received a
perfect elevation when it was raised to the canonical status of a
vice-province on January 2, 2000.The Vice Province was raised to
Province on March 5,2003 .
The Khrist Jyoti
Province at present has strength of 41 priests, 25 major
seminarians, 2 novices and 33 minor seminarians. It also has two
minor seminaries of its own. True to our missionary identity. We
have also sent one member for the pioneering and challenging foreign
mission in Tanzania, Africa.
Now we run 25 parishes
and stations a large number of sub stations. There are 350 villages
under our care in which there are around 13,500 Catholics. True to
the rich religious heritage of our motherland we take genuine care
to meet the pastoral needs of the people. Our social commitment to
the vast majority of the people, who constitute the bottom line of
the society here finds its articulation through our schools,
hospitals, health centres, village dispensaries, leper colonies,
non-formal education centres, youth animation programmes. Balawadies,
Mahila Mandal (Women Organization), Mass Media units, Medical Camps,
Poor boys homes, Adult education and conscientisation programmes
etc.
