Little Flower Province- Gorakhpur-Nepal

In the year 1947 the Prefecture Apostolic of Gorakhpur-Banaras was established bifurcating it from the diocese of Allahabad . Canadian Capuchins were entrusted with it and Rt. Rev. Msgr. Jerome Malenfant OFM Cap was made the Prefect. For a dozen years he was residing in Gorakhpur and St. Joseph's Church was his Cathedral. In 1959 he moved to Banaras as more evangelizational works were being done in that area beyond the river Ghaghra. In the year 1970 he invited the CST Fathers to come and work in Gorakhpur. In the CBCI meeting held in January 1970 in Ernakulam Msgr. Malenfant had expressed his willingness to entrust the three distircts of Deoria, Gorakhpur and Basti to the Orientals for evangalization. So it is now more than 30 years since the CST Fathers started to work in the Gorakhpur Mission. Fathers Robert and Boniface are the pioneer CST missionaries of this area. Msgr. Malenfant had resigned and in 1970 Rt. Rev. Dr. Patrick D' Souza was appointed the first Bishop of Banaras now called Varanasi. In 1974 a contract was signed by Bishop Patrick D' Souza and the Superior General of Little Flower Congregation. Accordingly in 1975 a batch of six priests came to work in the diocese of Varanasi. In 1976 Bishop Patrick withdrew all the diocesan priests from the districts of Deoria, Gorakhpur and Basti and CST fathers were given there the charge of the mission stations and the main undivided parish of St. Joseph's Church, Gorakhpur . Rev. Fr. Robert Kalaran the present Superior General of the CST Fathers was appointed the first Parish Priest of St. Joseph's Church . More and more CST Fathers came to work in the area assigned to them.

A few of them worked in the Varanasi area also to get mission experience . Some of the Fathers went back to Kerala owing to health and climatic reasons. In the year 1984 the Holy See erected the new Eparchy of Gorakhpur of the Syro Malabar rite and entrusted it to the CST Fathers. Bishop Dominic Kokkat CST was appointed the first Bishop of the new diocese. When the Eparchy was erected, there were 19 CST Fathers in Gorakhpur. This number remains more or less the same. At the moment there are 47 priests, 31 Major Seminarians, 2 Novices and 29 Minor Seminarians belonging to the Little Flower Mission of Gorakhpur. There are now 23 diocesan priests working in the Eparchy of Gorakhpur. It has a good number of Major and Minor Seminarians.

In the year 1994 the CST Fathers have opened a new Mission Station in Nepal. The administration of the Little Flower Mission has undergone various phases. First there was the Mission with its Mission Superior. This became a Region attached to St. Thomas Province . Then it became a Vice Province independent of the Province so much so it is now deemed a Province itself. The Regional Superior functioned and afterwards the Vice Provincial carries on the administration staying in Jyoti Bhavan, the minior Seminary of the CST Fathers in Gorakhpur. At present sufficient land is bought in Khorabar 10 kilometers away from the Bishop's House, Gorakhpur and the construction of the Provincial house is expected to start in the near future. We have now one missionary priest each in Africa, America, Canada and Germany from LTTLE FLOWER MISSION GORAKHPUR.

1. BASTI - BASIL BHAVAN

A priest house was built by the diocese in Basti in 1986. The Bishop of Gorakhpur handed it over to our Congregation on 3rd July 1986 sanctioning it as an ashram of our congregation.

2. CHARGAWAN - JYOTHI BHAVAN

Jyoti Bhavan is the Minor Seminary of Gorakhpur mission. It was started with the aim to train our missionaries in the cultural milieu of North India. The seminary functioned first in the Bishop’s House Campus. Then it was shifted from Bishop's house campus Gorakhpur to the new building in August 1988. It also functions as the  Provincial House of Little Flower Province.

3. JUNGLE SIKRI - LITTLE FLOWER ASHRAM  

A plot of land was purchased at Jungle Sikri with the intention of building the Provincial House and to establish a technical institute. The Registered office of the Little Flower Society is functioning here.

4. KALWARI - LITTLE FLOWER ASHRAM

Little Flower Ashram, Kalwari was started with the objective of undertaking rural development works, formal and non-formal education, health care programmes and people's organizations. Land for the Ashram was purchased in the year 1993 and Little Flower School (Hindi Medium) was opened in 1994.

5. MITHURA - NIRMAL ASHRAM

Mr. Laslidas, a christian from Varanasi, donated his land at Mithaura to the Diocese of Varanasi and the diocese handed it over to our congregation in 1982. A priest house was built there in 1998.

6. NARAYANGARH - LITTLE FLOWER ASHRAM 

Responding to the invitation of Msgr. Antony Sharma S.J, Prefect Apostolic of Nepal, the congregation started the first ashram in Nepal in 1993.

A mission station was opened at Salempur in 1984. The Priest house was built here in 1986. In 1987 the diocese of Gorakhpur handed over the station to our congregation.

8. VETTIKATTIRI - LITTILE FLOWER MISSION HOUSE

A Mission House was built in 2003 at Vettikkattiri, near Shornur, as a transit house in Kerala for the Little Flower Province. The formation house for the I Year Minor Seminarians of the Province is here.
